One-Stop Precision Metal Manufacturing from Mold to Delivery

Corrosion-Resistant Aluminum Components for a Norwegian Marine Equipment Maker

The Project

A Norwegian marine equipment company needed aluminum components that could survive the harshest conditions on Earth—salt spray, constant moisture, freezing temperatures, and relentless mechanical stress. These parts would be installed on vessels and offshore platforms where failure meant downtime, maintenance costs, and potential safety risks. The client required components that combined high mechanical strength with genuine corrosion resistance, not just a surface coating that would wear off in the first season.

The Challenge

The project presented three specific demands that had to be met without compromise.
Marine environment reliability. Standard aluminum parts might hold up indoors, but marine environments accelerate corrosion dramatically. The components had to resist saltwater exposure, humidity, and temperature swings without pitting, galvanic corrosion, or structural degradation.
High mechanical strength. These were load-bearing and functional parts, not cosmetic covers. They had to withstand assembly torque, operational vibration, and occasional impact without cracking or deforming. The alloy selection and manufacturing process had to deliver strength where it mattered.
Long service life. Marine equipment is expected to operate for years between major overhauls. The client could not afford components that would require replacement or repair after a single season. Every part had to be built to outlast the maintenance cycle.

Our Approach

We developed a manufacturing route that addressed corrosion resistance from the material level through to the final surface protection.
Aluminum alloy casting. We selected an aluminum alloy grade suited to marine applications, balancing castability with inherent corrosion resistance. The high-pressure die casting process formed complex structural geometries including internal passages and mounting features that would have been difficult and expensive to machine from solid billet.
CNC machining. After casting, we precision-machined critical sealing surfaces, threaded interfaces, and mounting points to ensure the components would assemble cleanly with the client’s equipment. Machining also removed any surface irregularities from casting that could become corrosion initiation points.
Surface protection treatment. We applied a protective surface treatment specifically chosen for marine exposure. This layer provided a barrier against salt and moisture while maintaining the underlying mechanical properties of the aluminum. The treatment was uniform across all surfaces, including internal cavities and machined edges where corrosion often starts first.
Performance inspection. Every batch was inspected for dimensional accuracy, surface coverage of the protective treatment, and material integrity. We checked that machined surfaces maintained their precision after treatment and that no areas were left unprotected.

The Result

The components were installed and have held up in active marine service without the corrosion-related failures the client had experienced with previous suppliers.
  • Improved corrosion resistance. The combination of marine-grade alloy, precision machining, and targeted surface protection delivered significantly better resistance to saltwater exposure than the client’s prior components.
  • Enhanced durability. The parts maintained their structural integrity and dimensional stability through installation and operational stress, showing no signs of cracking, warping, or thread damage.
  • Reliable marine application. The components are performing as designed in active marine environments, supporting the client’s equipment reliability and reducing maintenance-related downtime.
